An employee in Dubai wants to resign after accepting a new offer. She opens a blank email and freezes. Does she need to state a reason? What happens if she gets the notice period date wrong?
A wrong date on a resignation letter can shift your last working day, final salary, and settlement timing. This guide gives you four ready-to-use resignation letter templates for the UAE. It shows you how to state your notice period and last working day clearly. It also highlights the mistakes that most often create exit-date disputes.
Scope of this guide: This article covers private-sector employees under Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021. DIFC, ADGM, government employment, and domestic workers follow separate frameworks with different rules.

What Should a UAE Resignation Letter Include?
A UAE resignation letter should state your resignation clearly, name your position, and record your proposed last working day. These details protect you as evidence. UAE Labour Law requires written notice but sets no mandatory format.
| Recommended element | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Your full name and employee ID | Confirms your identity in HR records. |
| Date of submission | Helps establish when written notice was delivered. Keep proof of delivery or acknowledgment. |
| Clear resignation statement | Removes any ambiguity about your intention to resign. |
| Last working day | Sets your proposed notice-period end date. |
| Signature or email submission | Helps confirm that the letter is authentic and final. |
Important: Submit your resignation in writing through a method your contract or workplace allows. Email, an HR portal, or a signed letter all work. Keep evidence showing when it was delivered. Article 43 requires written notification. A verbal resignation does not satisfy this requirement, even if your employer appears to accept it verbally at the time.
How Long Is Your UAE Notice Period?
Your notice period is set by your employment contract. It generally falls between 30 and 90 days under Article 43 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021. Check your specific employment contract for the exact number of days, since the notice period varies by employer and contract.
Notice Period During Probation
Probation follows separate rules under Article 9. You generally owe one month’s written notice if you are joining another UAE employer. That new employer is generally required to reimburse your current employer’s recruitment costs, unless both employers agree otherwise. This cost does not fall on you.
For the full breakdown, including the recruitment-cost rule and the work permit restriction risk, see our UAE Notice Period guide and calculator. Confirm the details before finalizing your last working day.
Giving Notice While on Leave
Notice while on approved leave: Article 35 covers notice given while you are on approved leave. The notice period generally does not start until the day after your scheduled return, unless both parties agree otherwise.
Do not simply add your notice days to the date notice was given. Leave changes your start date for counting notice.

Resignation Letter Templates for the UAE
These four templates cover the situations most UAE employees face. Copy the template that matches your situation, fill in your details, and adjust the tone where necessary.
Tell your direct manager before you submit anything in writing and before telling colleagues. This keeps the process professional and avoids your written notice arriving as a surprise.
Template 1: Standard Notice Resignation
Use this template for a normal resignation where you will complete your full contractual notice period.

Dear [Manager Name],
I am writing to formally resign from my position as [Job Title] at [Company Name]. As per my contract, I will serve my notice period of [X] days, making my last working day [Date].
I am committed to a smooth handover and will complete all outstanding responsibilities before my departure. Thank you for the opportunities during my time here.

[Your Name] Template 2: Short Notice Resignation by Mutual Agreement
Use this template when you want your employer to agree to reduce or waive part of your notice period.
This template requests agreement. It does not admit that you owe compensation before your employer has decided whether to accept your request.
Avoid stating a specific grievance as your reason for leaving unless you intend to rely on Article 45. Phrases like “due to unpaid wages” can shift how your exit is legally characterized. Keep the reason neutral unless a legal claim is your goal.

[Your Name] Warning: If you leave early without written agreement or another lawful basis, you may owe notice allowance. This equals your last wage for the unserved period. This is calculated using your wage, which is not always the same figure as the basic salary used for gratuity.
Article 45 cases: This template is for a mutually agreed notice reduction. Different rules apply if you are leaving without notice under Article 45. This covers employer breaches such as non-payment of wages, workplace danger, or being assigned fundamentally different work without your consent.
Do not use the short-notice template if Article 45 may apply to your situation. See our Termination vs Resignation guide for an explanation, and confirm your specific case with MOHRE before leaving.
Template 3: Resignation During Probation
Use this template when resigning during your probation period. Confirm your exact notice requirement first under Article 9. It depends on whether you are leaving the UAE or joining another UAE employer.

[Your Name] Clear Subject Lines for a UAE Resignation Email
Your subject line helps HR identify, process, and file your resignation letter correctly. Use your name and a clear purpose instead of a vague phrase.
| Situation | Suggested subject line |
|---|---|
| Standard resignation | Resignation Letter – [Your Name] – [Employee ID] |
| Short-notice request | Resignation with Request to Reduce Notice – [Your Name] – [Employee ID] |
| Probation resignation | Resignation During Probation – [Your Name] |
Proof of submission: Keep a copy or delivery record of your resignation email, such as a sent-folder copy or a read receipt where available.
Do not forward your resignation letter to a personal email account if this breaches your employer’s information security policy. This matters most if the letter mentions confidential company details.
What Happens After You Submit Your Resignation Letter?
After you deliver valid written notice, your contract continues through the notice period. Your employer cannot refuse a valid resignation, since notice under Article 43 takes effect once delivered. You keep your wage and normal duties during this time, unless you and your employer agree otherwise in writing.
Your employment entitlements are calculated up to the contract end date. Your employer must generally pay all amounts due within 14 days after your contract ends under Article 53.
Jurisdiction reminder: The 14-day payment rule applies to employees covered by the federal private-sector labour law. DIFC, ADGM, government employment, domestic work, and other excluded categories follow separate legal frameworks.
Once you know your last working day, estimate what you may be owed using the UAE gratuity calculator.
You can also use our gratuity application letter templates to formally request payment after leaving your employment.
