Many job seekers in Dubai sign an offer without knowing if the number is fair. They compare it with a friend’s pay or a headline city figure. Neither tells them what their own role pays. The cost shows up later, in a weak starting salary and a smaller gratuity.
Published 2026 estimates put the average salary in Dubai at about AED 15,800 to 18,000 a month. The median sits near AED 13,800. Neither is an official figure, and both lean toward office and professional jobs. Your role decides your real range, and your basic pay decides your final settlement.
Pick your role in the tool below to see your own range. This guide also covers pay by experience, living costs, and package structure, so you can push back with real numbers.

Quick Summary for 2026
- No general minimum wage found for expats. The AED 6,000 floor covers Emiratis only
- Legal, senior healthcare, finance, and technology roles pay the most
- Gratuity and overtime use your basic pay, not your full package
- Some employers now use a monthly savings scheme instead of lump-sum gratuity
Average Salary in Dubai by Job and Role
A city-wide average tells you very little if you’re a dentist, a driver, or a data analyst. Your role decides your real range far more than the overall city figure does. Use the checker below to find your role’s range.
Eight of the most searched roles are shown below for quick reference.
| Role | Typical Monthly Salary Range (AED) |
|---|---|
| Software Engineer or Developer | 12,000 to 25,000 |
| Chartered Accountant (CA) | 15,000 to 27,000 |
| Teacher | 6,000 to 15,000 |
| General Practitioner (Doctor) | 19,000 to 45,000 |
| Mechanical Engineer | 8,000 to 20,000 |
| Data Analyst | 10,000 to 20,000 |
| Dentist | 12,000 to 25,000 |
| Business Analyst | 12,000 to 22,000 |
These ranges are compiled from published 2026 UAE recruitment salary guides and salary survey data. Most guides quote total monthly pay, not basic salary. Company size, DIFC versus mainland status, and specific certification move you toward the top or bottom of your band. Aggregator sites often disagree sharply on the same role, so treat any single figure with caution. Years of experience can also move you toward either end of a range, even within the same job title.
Domestic workers are covered by a separate legal framework. For details and end of service estimate, check our domestic worker gratuity calculator.

Dubai Salary Ranges by Experience Level
Dubai’s overall average salary looks straightforward at first glance, but that single number hides a wide spread. Entry-level roles start far lower, and senior packages run far higher. A director can earn ten times what an entry-level hire makes at the very same company.
| Category | Estimated Monthly Salary (AED) |
|---|---|
| Overall average (estimate) | 15,800 to 18,000 |
| Median (estimate) | About 13,800 |
| Entry-level professional (0 to 3 years) | 4,800 to 8,500 |
| Mid-level (4 to 9 years) | 12,000 to 26,000 |
| Senior (10+ years) | 25,000 to 60,000+ |
| Director or senior management | 50,000 to 80,000+ |
These are broad market estimates, not official Dubai government salary statistics. The ranges come from published 2026 market salary guides, not government data, and they draw mostly on office and professional roles. Trade, service, and domestic roles often start lower, as the tool above shows. These are Dubai figures, so Abu Dhabi and other emirates may differ. Use them as a city-level benchmark only. Your specific role, experience, and package matter more when you judge an actual offer.
Dubai Median Salary: The More Honest Number
Published estimates put the median salary in Dubai near AED 13,800 a month. That is a different figure from the average, and it matters. Most people compare their pay to the wrong one of the two.
The median is the middle point. Line up every salary in Dubai from lowest to highest. The median is the one in the very middle. Half of workers earn more. Half earn less.
The average works differently. It adds every salary together, then divides by the number of workers. A few very large salaries drag it upward.
| Measure | Amount (AED) | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Average | 15,800 to 18,000 | Skewed upward by top earners |
| Median | About 13,800 | What a typical worker actually earns |
That gap is roughly AED 2,000 to 4,000 a month. If your offer sits near AED 13,800, it is close to the estimated median. But use your specific role range above to judge whether the offer is competitive for your job. Use the median when you compare, not the average.
Dubai Salary in USD, GBP, and INR
Comparing a Dubai offer against pay back home is easier in your own currency. A number that sounds huge in rupees can look average once converted to dirhams. Use the table as a rough guide, not an exact figure.
| Monthly Salary (AED) | USD | GBP | INR |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10,000 | 2,720 | 2,060 | 2,63,000 |
| 15,800 | 4,300 | 3,250 | 4,16,000 |
| 25,000 | 6,810 | 5,150 | 6,59,000 |
| 50,000 | 13,610 | 10,290 | 13,17,000 |
The AED is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate, so the USD column stays reliable. GBP and INR shift with the daily exchange rate, so treat those two as approximate. Figures use Central Bank of the UAE reference rates from 9 October 2026.
Cost of Living in Dubai: What Your Salary Needs to Cover
A salary figure means little without the cost side of the equation. Rent alone can swallow half your monthly pay in the wrong neighbourhood. Groceries and transport add a smaller, steadier drain on top.
| Expense | Estimated Cost (AED) |
|---|---|
| Rent, one-bedroom, mid-range area | 5,000 to 9,000 monthly |
| Utilities (DEWA) | 500 to 1,500 monthly |
| Housing fee (Dubai Municipality, via DEWA) | 5 percent of annual rent, billed monthly |
| Groceries | 1,000 to 2,500 monthly |
| Transport (Metro pass or fuel) | 200 to 450 monthly |
| Private school fees, per child | Varies by school and year group. Check the school’s KHDA fee sheet |
WARNING: Involuntary Loss of Employment insurance is mandatory for most private sector employees. It costs AED 5 a month if your basic salary is below AED 16,000, and AED 10 above that. Not subscribing brings an AED 400 fine.
These costs apply whether your package includes extra benefits or not. The next section covers what else might be riding on top of your basic salary.
What Else Might Be in Your Package Beyond Basic Salary
Your basic salary is only part of the picture. Many Dubai employers add extra benefits on top. These can be worth thousands of dirhams a year, even without showing in the monthly figure. Check what’s actually included before you compare two offers side by side.
| Benefit | What It Typically Covers |
|---|---|
| School fees | Full or partial tuition for children, sometimes capped per child |
| Housing or accommodation | Free company housing, or a fixed monthly allowance |
| Medical insurance | Health cover for you, sometimes extended to your family |
| Repatriation flights | One or two annual flights home, or a one-way flight when your contract ends |
| Relocation allowance | A one-time payment covering moving costs when you first join, not repeated annually |
| Bonus or commission | Often variable. Whether it counts toward gratuity depends on how your contract defines basic wage, so ask in writing |
None of these show up in your basic salary line, but they change what an offer is actually worth. Weigh them against the cost of living table above before you sign.
What Counts as a Good Salary in Dubai?
A good salary in Dubai depends on your household, not a fixed number. A single professional and a family of four need very different monthly figures. Rent and school fees usually decide which end of the range you land on.
| Household Type | Essentials Only (AED/Month) | Comfortable With Savings (AED/Month) |
|---|---|---|
| Single professional | 7,000 to 14,000 | 15,000 to 22,000 |
| Married couple | 8,000 to 17,000 | 22,000 to 35,000 |
| Family with two children | Depends on rent and school fees | 35,000 to 55,000+ |
These are illustrative figures, not official benchmarks. Essentials cover rent, DEWA, groceries, and transport from the cost table above, with no savings. The comfortable column assumes mid-range rent, no employer housing, and a modest savings margin.
Have one figure in mind? Use this quick check, and divide any yearly offer by 12 first. For example, AED 362,000 a year is about AED 30,200 a month.
| Monthly Salary (AED) | What It Usually Means in Dubai |
|---|---|
| 8,000 | Covers essentials for one person at the low end, and works best with employer housing |
| 15,000 | Comfortable for a single professional with mid-range rent |
| 25,000 | Comfortable for a single person or a couple |
| 30,000 | Comfortable for a couple. A family with two children sits near the lower edge of its range |
TIP: Skilled professionals earning at least AED 30,000 a month may qualify for the 10 year Golden Visa. You also need a bachelor’s degree and a MOHRE level 1 or 2 role. Confirm whether your emirate counts basic or total pay.
Does Minimum Wage Affect Your Salary Offer in Dubai?
Most job seekers in Dubai have no legal salary floor protecting their offer. The market and your contract set the number instead. One group is treated differently, and it matters if you are an Emirati national.
Article 27 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 lets the Cabinet set a minimum wage. We found no general minimum wage for expatriate workers. Your salary is set by your contract and the market. MOHRE’s published minimum covers Emirati nationals in the private sector. This sits alongside the Nafis programme, which offers separate salary support to Emiratis in the private sector. As of January 2026, MOHRE set that floor at AED 6,000 a month. It applies to new, renewed, and amended Emirati work permits. Existing Emirati staff had until 30 June 2026 to reach it. Our UAE labour law page covers the wider wage rules in full.
MOHRE also sorts roles into skill levels for permit and visa purposes. Check your own classification on our UAE labour card page before relying on a specific number.
WARNING: From 1 July 2026, MOHRE can suspend new work permits for establishments that still pay Emiratis below AED 6,000. Where Emiratisation targets apply, those Emiratis can also stop counting toward them.
Why Your Basic Salary Decides Your Gratuity and Overtime
The salary figure above is your total package, but it isn’t the number your entitlements run on. Gratuity and overtime pay are calculated on your basic salary, not your housing or transport allowance. A poorly split package can quietly cost you thousands at your final settlement.
Article 51(5) of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 bases gratuity on your last basic wage. Article 19 does the same for overtime. See also how gratuity relates to CTC. Our homepage explains the gratuity formula and daily wage calculation in full. Our leave salary calculator and overtime calculator show how leave pay and overtime work out.
Here is an illustrative example. Kwame, a site supervisor in Al Barsha, earns a package of AED 11,400 a month. His basic pay is AED 5,700, half of that. A colleague on the same package gets 70 percent, or AED 7,980, as basic. After six years, Kwame’s gratuity is AED 25,650 and his colleague’s is AED 35,910. That is AED 10,260 less on the same package.
Your employment contract should state your basic wage separately from allowances. Ask your employer for that split in writing before you sign.
The Savings Scheme Option
Some employers use the Savings Scheme instead of standard lump-sum gratuity. Under this system, the employer pays monthly contributions into an approved investment fund. The contribution still uses your basic salary.
| Feature | How it works |
|---|---|
| Contribution, first 5 years of service | 5.83 percent of basic salary, monthly |
| Contribution, after 5 years of service | 8.33 percent of basic salary, monthly |
| Employer participation | Voluntary for employers. Mandatory for employees the employer enrols |
| Financial free zones | DIFC and ADGM run their own end-of-service systems |
The scheme comes from Cabinet Resolution No. 96 of 2023, Article 6. Ask your employer which end-of-service system applies to you.
NOTE: The Savings Scheme is optional for employers. Once your employer enrols you, your subscription becomes mandatory.
Does Your Free Zone Change Your Pay?
Your zone does not set your salary. Pay in DIFC or JAFZA is driven by the same market as mainland Dubai. What does change is the end-of-service system behind that salary, and that is worth knowing before you sign.
In DIFC, employers generally pay into DEWS or another qualifying savings scheme instead of a lump-sum gratuity. This comes from the DIFC Employment Law (DIFC Law No. 2 of 2019, as amended). ADGM runs its own gratuity rules. Our UAE labour law page covers both, and our gratuity by sector guide compares mainland, free zone, and government jurisdictions. JAFZA and DMCC apply federal labour law alongside their own zone rules. Use our JAFZA gratuity calculator for JAFZA-specific calculations and exit guidance.
Common Mistakes When Comparing Salary Offers
Job seekers in Dubai often compare the wrong number. A high total package can hide a low basic salary and a weak entitlement position. Most of these mistakes only surface after you’ve already signed.
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Comparing total package only | Ask for the basic salary figure in writing |
| Assuming allowances count toward gratuity | Check the gratuity formula before you sign |
| Ignoring free zone differences | Confirm whether the role sits in DIFC, ADGM, JAFZA, or UAE mainland |
| Skipping the notice period terms | Check the notice period calculator before resigning |
| Comparing against the wrong role table row | Match your exact title and seniority, not just your field |

How to Negotiate a Higher Salary in Dubai
Your first offer rarely reflects what an employer will actually pay. Dubai’s market moves fast, and most companies leave room to negotiate, especially for in-demand skills. A few concrete moves can shift your number before you sign. Use the data above as your leverage.
Quote the role table above, not just a headline average, when you name your number.
- Point to your specific certifications or years of experience, since both move you up a range
- Ask for basic salary in writing before you discuss the total package
- Negotiate the split, not just the total, since a higher basic share protects your gratuity and overtime pay
- Get any verbal promise on allowances or benefits written into the offer letter
A well-supported counter-offer can strengthen your negotiating position, although the outcome depends on the employer and role.

Conclusion
Your role decides your real range far more than one city-wide average ever could. Find your line in the table above, then check it against the cost of living and household tables. Your basic salary, not your total package, is what decides your gratuity and overtime pay. Run your own numbers through our gratuity calculator once you have an offer in hand.
